And so it begins

March 23rd, 2009

The time has come. A new chapter in my life has started. To mark the turn of the page, I went bald. Here are the before, during, and after pics. It’s true. Shaving the hair makes you feel naked. My head is more delicate than my inner thigh. Everytime the wind blows, I feel like someone is prodding me with a feather probe. But on the upside, no one will want to mess with me, which means I don’t need to buy a Rambo knife for protection. When I get to the Midwest, people will think I’m the first inducted neo-Nazi Asian skinhead.

My trip was delayed by several days due to last minute logistical measures and unforseen events. I finally have all the bare necessities that I need to start the trip, including some duct tape, in case my hood flies off.

This will be my living room, dining room, bedroom, and transport during the trip. It is too bad that the only ones I will be entertaining are the likes of Thoreau and Covey.

The official trip begins today, where I will ride into the sunset for Death Valley. Goodbye forever?

Ah! You have the route markers nicely sorted now. I’ll leave you with a Buechner quote. Take care on your journey and God bless you, Andrew.

Listen to your life. See it for the fathomless mystery that it is. In the boredom and pain of it no less than in the excitement and gladness: touch, taste, smell your way to the holy and hidden heart of it because in the last analysis all moments are key moments, and life itself is grace.

Greetings from Cali Girl,I just got your email out of my junk box! I might add that your blog is not junk in the trunk! Let me first tell you that I already miss seeing you and your humor! I am so impressed by your leap of faith. I will keep you in my prayers each day that the Lord will guide you and keep you safe. I missed seeing you off or did you miss coming to TM meeting? At any rate, be safe and I look forward to reading about your adventures. I had a good laugh today when I read about you going bald…………WOW, not only are you naked but you’ll have to wear a beanie to keep warm at nite. Ciao my friend.

Aww…Andrew, u look so cute with hair. However, I get it. The transformation that outwardly expresses what is going on internally and within your soul. I’m glad it gave you protection and that you didn’t have to get a Rambo knife. I’m so happy that Valerie was praying for you, because although I did not know you back then, I am praying for you today. Your passion for life, (to feel alive and rather than remain status quo to free your mind of typical conventions of a typical 9-5 desk job life), and compassion for people (from the homeless to the graffiti artists to the random hitch hikers you picked up on your sojourn), and the way you perceive beauty, for (beauty is in the eye of the beholder) is a precious quality that I hope will remain eternally. For you bring beauty to the forefront, to the passerbys of life, whom merely drift aimlessly with no zeal, no sense of purpose, confined and chained to the realities of life and their comfortable existence…But you my dear, you bring culture, art, perspective, and things indiscernible to the naked eye that sees but does not really see, to the consciousness of those not truly living life. You are a visionary and I am thankful that you have shared this with me, and shared with me your stories. They are priceless, and from knowing you I have been forever changed. Your transcendence has elevated the mundane to the sublime. I wish I could’ve seen you on Fox news, but alas, I was in NY at the time, and in my own hell. 🙂 Take care my friend. And grow your hair out please. hehehe..jk.
